Hello
Welcome to my practice. I’m Dr. Marc Stopford, a specialist psychiatrist with years of experience in helping individuals navigate and manage a wide range of mental health challenges. My approach is built on a foundation of empathy, professionalism, and a commitment to providing tailored, evidence-based care.
My Story
With a particular focus on mood and psychotic disorders, I am committed to providing comprehensive psychiatric care, grounded in the latest evidence-based practices. After completing my medical degree (MBBCh) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016, I have gained invaluable experience during my internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. I then served as a medical officer in emergency medicine at Lenasia South Hospital, where I encountered a wide array of medical, surgical, and psychiatric conditions, honing my ability to manage complex cases.
Driven by a passion for psychiatry, I pursued my specialisation in psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I earned my Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed Psych) and the prestigious Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa (FCPsych). During my training, I worked at several renowned psychiatric institutions, including Tara Hospital, Sterkfontein Hospital, and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, gaining extensive exposure to a broad spectrum of psychiatric illnesses. My work has also extended to community mental health services and forensic psychiatric institutions, enriching my understanding of both acute and chronic mental health conditions.
Adhering to standard practice guidelines, including the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition), ensuring that all diagnostic assessments and treatment approaches are evidence-based and align with international standards. This approach allows the ability to offer well-rounded, individualised care for patients dealing with a wide range of psychiatric disorders.
In addition to clinical expertise, I am dedicated to advancing the field of psychiatry. I have contributed to the academic community with a published article in the South African Journal of Psychiatry and remain committed to ongoing research, ensuring that I stay at the forefront of the latest developments in mental health care.
